Grenache (or garnacha) quite often underrated but one of the world's most widely planted grape varieties is generally part of a blend including some of the finest blends in the world. Where its famed is the Rhône Valley, including one of the 13 varieties allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape where typically it is the main component. Most famously from the northern half of Spain, where it originated, it is found in Rioja and the very trendy Priorat where lots of ancient Garnacha vines are planted producing wines of exceptional quality and complexity. Grenache Noir is a staple grape in the Languedoc region where it blends particularly well with Syrah and Mourvèdre in red and rosé wines. Grenache is soft berry flavoured with a little bit of spice. As it ages it becomes more serious in nature with notes of leather and tobacco.
