Domaine Reine-Juliette Terres Rouges Picpoul de Pinet 2016
Refreshing, lip smacking style of white with a mineral, grapefruit tang and lime fresh acidities with green apple notes and good fruit in the mid palate. Bight, crystalline and mineral. Domaine Reine Juliette Picpoul de Pinet is 100% Picpoul, unoaked. This crisp white is bursting with citrus, apricots, white flowers and mineral notes and a hint of salt air on the nose. The palate is dry but ripe with rich flavors of stone fruits and citrus. It is long and flavourful on the finish. A fine example of the newly fashionable Picpoul de Pinet at its best.
Reine Juliette Picpoul de Pinet, named Terres Rouges from the red soils where the vineyards lie, in the region of Languedoc in Southern France. Guillaume Allies fashions brisk and saline Picpoul from 25 acres of estate vineyards situated on the edge of the Thau Lagoon.
All of the grapes are grown on the Domaine, grapes are picked at night when they are cool, then further cooled on arrival at the winery followed by long cool fermentations and all stainless steel handling. Picpoul is very delicate and all handling has to be gentle if a maker is to retain all its edgy, nervous character in the final wine. The balance that needs to be struck is between the delicate acacia fruit and the lip smacking lime zest acidities. Lesser makers miss this balance and their wines appear mean rather than lean.
Shellfish and fish are perfect matches. It also makes a perfect aperitif
